What is prophylaxis?
A prophylaxis is the clinical term for a dental cleaning. A dental cleaning and exam is an important part of keeping your smile healthy and acts as powerful diagnostic tool. The goal of a dental cleaning is to prevent tooth decay from forming, examine your smile for signs of damage, and begin planning the most effective treatments. A dental cleaning is generally performed by one of our skilled dental hygienists under the direction of our dentist, Dr. Valerie H. Musial.
What happens during a dental cleaning?
Your initial oral examination at Musial Dental Center will include a visual examination, charting, periodontal probing, and recommendations for treatment. As a diagnostic measure, we take a series of dental X-rays to ensure we fully understand your smile. During the exam, we will also check your neck and oral tissues for lumps, red or white patches, or recurring sore areas. Screening for early changes in the oral tissues helps us detect cancer at a stage when it can be more successfully treated.
After your initial dental cleaning, we will invite you to schedule your bi-yearly recall appointment to ensure your smile remains in good health. We may also suggest a limited examination that focuses on a particular problem or concern; this is usually completed right before treatment for a specific condition.
