What are sealants?
At Musial Dental Center, we want to prevent tooth decay as well as repair it. This is especially true for our younger patients who have not experienced much decay or damage in the past. To aid in this goal, we provide dental sealants. Sealants are thin coatings made of plastic that are painted onto the surface of teeth, generally the pre-molars and molars. Located in the very back of your mouth, these teeth have deep grooves and pits that are often hard to clean and prone to trapping bacteria, acid, and decay. Sealants act as a protective barrier to keep your smile healthy and strong.
How are sealants applied?
Sealants are easy to apply and only take minutes per tooth. Dr. Valerie H. Musial, prepares the tooth, if necessary, with a gentle etching process and then paints the sealant on. The sealant is then hardened with an ultraviolet light. When taken care of properly, sealants can last for up to five years. While sealants are most useful for children, adults who do not have cavities or existing dental restorations on their back teeth may also benefit from sealants.
